History
Making an impact in the Wadsworth community for over 175 years
First Christian Church of Wadsworth is nearly 200 years old, having been established in 1828. The congregation first met in homes, then in a log school house, and occasionally in a barn if a large crowd was expected. In 1842, the growing congregation purchased the lot at the corner of High and Boyer where the present church stands for $50. A plain, sturdy meeting house was built, which is still incorporated in the main sanctuary of our present building. The saplings that supported that original roof can still be seen in the attic above our sanctuary.
Over the years, the sanctuary was lengthened, a wing was added to the south, and then a wing to the north, giving our sanctuary the shape of a cross. Because of a robust Sunday School program for both children and adults, a large brick Education Building was built and then later connected to the white wooden church building.
Other historic facts of First Christian Church:
When an organ was installed in the late 1860's, it was the first use of a musical instrument in a church in Medina County.
In 1979, when Martha Everhard became our Associate Pastor, she was the first female pastor in Medina County.
We have had a Contemporary Worship Service in addition to our Traditional Service since 2000.
Our previous two pastors, Phil Gould and Jim Singleton, each served our congregation for 36 years.
First Christian is an historic, stable church, that is remaining relevant and a beacon of light in this changing world. We welcome you to come and be part of our future.
